If you are positioning as an eco-conscious brand and need packaging, you have two main paper-based options: FSC-certified natural kraft, or 100% post-consumer recycled GC2 board. They look different, perform differently, and communicate different things.
FSC natural kraft (250–350gsm)
Color: warm tan/brown, varies by paper mill. Slightly inconsistent batch-to-batch (a feature, not a bug — communicates "natural").
Print: CMYK works but colors shift toward the kraft tone. Whites become cream. Best with single-color or 2-color print.
Brand signal: artisanal, hand-made, organic. Used by tea/coffee, soap, honey, kraft beer, candle brands.
Cost: roughly the same as coated white board.
Recycled GC2 (off-white)
Color: warm off-white with subtle visible recycled fibers. More uniform than kraft.
Print: works well with full CMYK, only slight shift. Whites read cream.
Brand signal: circular economy, modern eco, B-Corp aesthetic. Used by tech brands, modern beauty, supplements.
Cost: ~5% premium over virgin coated board.
Which to pick?
Pick FSC kraft if your brand voice is artisanal and your aesthetic is warm/organic. Tea, coffee, soap, candles, gourmet food.
Pick recycled GC2 if your brand voice is contemporary and you need vivid CMYK printing. Modern beauty, tech accessories, supplements, B-Corp launches.
Both are recyclable
Both materials go into the standard paper recycling stream. Avoid plastic lamination on either for full recyclability — use water-based matte varnish instead.
