Why soft-touch matte became the universal premium beauty standard

Walk into any high-end beauty retailer in 2026 and look at the boxes: nine out of ten will have a soft-touch matte finish. Five years ago this was a premium upgrade. Today it is the baseline expectation.

What is soft-touch matte?

It is a thin polypropylene laminate film bonded to the printed surface with a velvety, slightly textured finish. The hand-feel is close to suede or fine kid leather. The optical effect is deep, non-reflective black and rich saturated colors.

Why it became universal

  • It signals premium without saying premium. The hand-feel does the work — buyers know without being told.
  • It hides fingerprints. A practical advantage on a product that gets handled in retail and unboxed at home.
  • It deepens dark colors. Pure blacks read deeper, navy reads richer, dark burgundy gains depth.
  • It is now affordable. Volumes drove cost down — soft-touch matte adds €0.20–0.30 per unit, where it used to add €0.80+.

When NOT to use it

Soft-touch matte is plastic-based, not fully recyclable in standard streams. For eco-positioned brands, consider matte water-based varnish (no plastic, similar hand-feel) or uncoated specialty paper instead.

For vivid color reproduction (food packaging, kids products), gloss lamination still wins on saturation.

Configuration tip

Pair soft-touch matte with hot foil stamping or spot UV for a contrast effect — the matte field makes the foil/UV pop more sharply. This is the formula behind most luxury beauty boxes you have seen recently.
